The University Name

The university name, for purposes of internal and external promotional communications, should be written as "the University of Texas Medical Branch" on first reference. "The" is capitalized only at the beginning of sentences or lines of type in an ad or invitation.

The phrase "at Galveston" is no longer included in the logo, because UTMB's scope extends far beyond the island. However, the university's unique location is an asset and should be made clear in publication text as appropriate. (Please note that legal documents such as contracts and interagency agreements may require use of the full formal name: "The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.")

"UTMB" is acceptable on subsequent references.

"The Medical Branch" (or "the Medical Branch" when it appears mid-sentence) can be used as an alternative to "UTMB" in alumni publications, but its use is discouraged in promotional materials because it may interfere with recognition of the "UTMB" name.

When referring to "the university," lowercase the "u."
